Stylish, intimate and utterly absorbing, Moss & Freud is a dazzling biographical drama that paints creativity, fame and vulnerability with remarkable elegance. Rich with emotion and visual flair, this captivating film proves that behind every iconic image lies a deeply human and moving story. It genuinely peels back the veneer of the supermodel and artist we are all aware of but perhaps actually know little about as people, to reveal real depth, humanity and surprises.
Directed by James Lucas, Moss & Freud explores the fascinating real-life relationship between supermodel Kate Moss and legendary painter Lucian Freud during the creation of Freud’s famous 2002 portrait. Set against the glamorous yet chaotic backdrop of early-2000s London, the film blends artistic drama with psychological character study, following Moss as she gradually sheds her celebrity armour while posing for the notoriously uncompromising artist. The cinematography beautifully recreates the smoky bohemian atmosphere of Freud’s studio, while themes of identity, beauty, obsession and self-discovery run powerfully throughout.
Ellie Bamber (Nocturnal Animals and Willow), delivers an accomplished and magnetic performance as Kate Moss. She is backed up by legendary veteran actor Derek Jacobi (Gladiator), who brings warmth and gravitas to Lucian and Will Tudor (Game of Thrones), who adds charisma as Jefferson Hack.
The film premiered at the BFI London Film Festival and earned praise from critics and audiences that has continued to build for its striking visuals, fantastic performances and thoughtful exploration of celebrity and artistry.
