With the sad passing of Dolly Parton recently, we here at the Empire Theatre wanted to celebrate the great lady. With the initiation of “Dolly Day” on the 25th September written in US style 9/25 (9 to 5!) we just simply had to give you the chance to enjoy Dolly with us at the Empire on the big screen. The film is a riotous, sharp-witted masterpiece that will leave you cheering at your screen! 9 to 5 is an absolute triumph of workplace comedy, blending razor-sharp satire with pure, feel-good charm and has Dolly at her best in one of her greatest screen performances and of course “that” song!.
In case you have never seen it the story follows three working women, a fresh novice, a overlooked senior secretary, and a falsely maligned executive assistant, who join forces to take down their tyrannical, "sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot" of a boss. Featuring vibrant 1980s visuals, snappy dialogue, and a lively, empowering soundtrack, the film skewers corporate misogyny while celebrating female solidarity and workplace equity.
The stellar trio is led by Jane Fonda (Klute), Lily Tomlin (Nashville), and of course the late, great Dolly Parton herself (Steel Magnolias), whose incredible chemistry powers every hilarious scene. The film was a runaway box-office hit, the film earned massive popular acclaim, two Golden Globe nominations for Parton, and an Academy Award nomination for its iconic, chart-topping title song.
