Set during the crucial 72 hours before the Normandy invasion, Anthony Maras’s film follows British meteorologist Captain James Stagg (Andrew Scott), whose increasingly ominous forecasts threaten to derail General Dwight D. Eisenhower’s (Brendan Fraser) meticulously planned assault. With the fate of thousands hanging in the balance, Stagg must stand his ground against conflicting predictions and immense military pressure.
The film’s claustrophobic, dialogue-driven style keeps the focus on maps, forecasts and tense exchanges rather than conventional battlefield spectacle, before expanding into the invasion itself. Muted period photography, atmospheric sound and tightly controlled editing create an appropriately oppressive sense of anticipation.
Andrew Scott, brilliant in All of Us Strangers, delivers a superbly nuanced performance, while Fraser, the star of The Mummy, brings humanity and vulnerability to Eisenhower. Kerry Condon, known for The Banshees of Inisherin, adds warmth and intelligence as Kay Summersby. The response from critics and audiences has been positive, with particular praise for all the cast particularly Scott, the heart stopping and nerve shredding drama and for shining a light on a new aspect of the D-day invasion.
