Project Hail Mary is a dazzling, heart-lifting sci-fi triumph that rockets straight into your imagination and refuses to let go. Bursting with wonder, wit and warmth, this interstellar adventure is one of the best films so far this year and is as emotionally uplifting as it is visually spectacular. The story is written by Andy Weir who also wrote the hugely popular The Martian (2015) and this is as good if not better!
Blending science fiction, adventure and heartfelt drama, the film follows Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling (La La Land, Barbie), who awakens alone aboard a spacecraft with no memory. As his past slowly returns, he realises he’s humanity’s last hope against a mysterious organism draining the Sun’s energy. His journey becomes even more compelling when he forms an unexpected bond with an alien ally called Rocky (for obvious reasons!), adding humour, heart and a surprising buddy dynamic to the story.
Visually, the film impresses with richly realised space environments and tactile production design, favouring practical effects and immersive lighting to heighten realism. The film also has real heart blending themes of friendship, sacrifice and scientific ingenuity throughout, giving the spectacle genuine emotional depth. It also includes great supporting performances from the excellent Sandra Hüller (Anatomy of a Fall) and Lionel Boyce (The Bear), adding both gravitas and charm.
Critically, the film has enjoyed strong acclaim and a box office smash, praised for its visual splendour, emotional resonance and Gosling’s charismatic performance, with audiences awarding it top marks and critics calling it a thrilling, hopeful space odyssey.
