The Ballad of Wallis Island.

The Ballad of Wallis Island is a quietly dazzling gem of a film that could well become a cult classic. It is a whimsical, emotionally rich and genuine funny comedy that strikes a perfect chord between melancholy and mirth.

Directed by James Griffiths, this British indie follows faded folk musician Herb McGwyer (Tom Basden, After Life) as he journeys to a remote Welsh island for what he believes is a lucrative private gig. Instead, he finds himself the sole entertainment for Charles (Tim Key, Alan Partridge), an eccentric lottery winner with a shrine to Herb’s former band—and a surprise reunion in store. When Nell Mortimer (Carey Mulligan, Drive), Herb’s ex-bandmate and ex-lover, arrives with her new husband, tensions simmer and old wounds resurface. But as the trio navigates awkward dinners, makeshift stages, and bittersweet memories, the film blossoms into a tender meditation on regret, reconciliation, and the healing power of music.

With original songs penned by Basden, the film’s folk soundtrack is as heartfelt as its characters. Its ideology celebrates second chances, emotional honesty, and the strange beauty of human connection. Mulligan is luminous, Key is hilariously endearing, and Basden anchors it all with quiet pathos. The Ballad of Wallis Island is a love letter to lost dreams, found friendships, and the magic of unexpected encores. Utterly charming and a real British comedy classic in the making.
