Vertigo (Classic Cinema)

This months Classic Cinema offering is Vertigo which is cinema at its most hypnotic, an elegant, unsettling masterpiece that pulls you in and never lets go. A towering classic of the psychological thriller genre, it’s widely hailed as one of the greatest films ever made, regularly voted number 1 in the best films ever made lists, and with very good reason.

Directed with icy precision by Alfred Hitchcock, Vertigo tells the story of former detective Scottie Ferguson, whose fear of heights becomes entangled with an obsessive investigation into a mysterious woman. Set against the haunting beauty of San Francisco, the plot slowly spirals from romantic intrigue into psychological nightmare. Hitchcock’s stylistic brilliance is everywhere, swirling camera movements, bold color symbolism, dreamlike editing, and Bernard Herrmann’s unforgettable score create a mood of obsession, identity, and illusion. The film explores themes of control, desire, trauma, and the dangerous act of reshaping reality to fit fantasy.

James Stewart delivers one of his most complex performances (also iconic in It’s a Wonderful Life), while Kim Novak mesmerizes in a dual role (also starring in Picnic). Barbara Bel Geddes adds emotional grounding to the story. Initially divisive, Vertigo has since received overwhelming acclaim, topping critics’ polls all over the world and earning its reputation as Hitchcock’s most profound achievement.

The film will be preceded by a short introduction by a member of the Halstead Empire team on why the film is regarded as a classic, some great trivia and interesting things to look out for during the screening. Come join us and celebrate this Hitchcock masterpiece on the big screen with appreciative fellow film fans at The Empire on the big screen. Cinema really does not get much better than this!

You are likely to enjoy Vertigo if you liked Rear Window (1954) or Mulholland Drive (2001).
