Sentimental Value

Sentimental Value is an absolute cracker of a film, a beautifully profound and moving drama that captures the heart and soul like a cinematic embrace! From its emotionally rich performances to its poignant storytelling, this is the kind of film that stays with you long after the credits roll. It has been nominated for a huge nine Oscars so here is your chance to see what all the fuss is about.

Directed by the visionary Joachim Trier, Sentimental Value is a drama that delves deep into family ties, memory and reconciliation. After the death of their mother, sisters Nora (Renate Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) are brought back into the orbit of their estranged father, Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård), a once-acclaimed filmmaker now trying to reconnect by casting Nora in his new project, a role she initially refuses. As old wounds simmer and secrets surface, the film navigates the tender and turbulent terrain of forgiveness, creative legacy and the echoes of the past.

Renate Reinsve, known for The Worst Person in the World, delivers a stunning, layered lead performance, while the always excellent Stellan Skarsgård (Chernobyl, The Avengers) brings towering presence as the complex father figure. Elle Fanning (Maleficent, The Great) also shines, earning widespread acclaim including her first Oscar nomination.

The film premiered to a 15-minute standing ovation at Cannes and went on to win the Grand Prix, with critics lauding its emotional subtlety and visual grace. It has amassed numerous award nominations, including the nine Academy Award nods including Best Picture and Best Director, and has been getting lots of love from critics and audiences alike.

You might like Sentimental Value if you enjoyed Manchester by the Sea (2016) or The Farewell (2019).
