The legendary Back to the Future turns 40 this year (yes you heard us right 40!) and to celebrate it we are bringing it back to the Empire big screen for one night only in our Classic Cinema strand. It remains a timeless sci-fi adventure-comedy that redefined time travel in film history, and has not really been surpassed since. Bursting with imagination, heart, and unforgettable characters, its not just a movie, its a cultural landmark that still electrifies both old and new generations of viewers.
Directed by Robert Zemeckis and produced by Steven Spielberg, the story follows teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) who is accidentally sent back to 1955 in a DeLorean time machine built by eccentric inventor Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd). When Marty disrupts his parents first meeting, he must repair the past to save his own future, without getting erased in the process. The wonderful Michael J. Fox, (Teen Wolf and Family Ties), brings charm and energy, while Christopher Lloyd (The Addams Family & more recently Nobody) delivers one of cinema's most beloved mad scientists.
Stylistically, the film blends energetic pacing, great special effects, heartfelt moments, a pitch-perfect 1980s soundtrack, including Huey Lewis's iconic The Power of Love, and of course that supercool. DeLorean! Its themes of destiny, family, identity, and the ripple effects of our choices remain just as relevant. The film is a a bona-fide classic and is universally acclaimed, by both critics and audiences and was inducted into the American National Film Registry for cultural significance. Come and join us for a trip to a nostalgic past and Back To The Future!
The film will be preceded by an informative and fun short introduction by a member of the Halstead Empire team on why the film is regarded as a classic, some great trivia and interesting things to look out for during the screening.
